Brithdir Mawr Celtic Language Centre

We offer classes in three of the six Celtic languages – Welsh, Irish and Cornish

Classes run on a Thursday and at present we offer :

  • Welsh – We have two Welsh classes running, both at Entry Level (Mynediad)
  • Cornish – The present class will be finishing 1st Grade in June
  • Irish – Running at Intermediate Level B1

Please contact us if you are interested in joining any of the classes.

You are welcome to attend a taster class to see if the level is right for you.

Why Cornish?

Cornish and Welsh are sister languages. They are very similar to each other. There is a language revival in Cornwall as more and more people learn Cornish. There are classes for adults in Cornwall and in other parts of the world, both in classrooms and online.

Cornish is very easy to learn if you already speak Welsh. Cornish is being introduced into schools in Cornwall at all levels. You can find out more on the Go Cornish website.

The Cornish class in Brithdir Mawr is for complete beginners and will prove an interesting and enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half a week as you learn one of the six Celtic languages, and one which is very close to Welsh. The main emphasis in the class will be on spoken Cornish although you will also learn to read and write the language.

Chwaer ieithoedd yw Cernyweg a Chymraeg. Maent yn debyg iawn i’w gilydd. Mae adfywiad iaith yng Nghernyw wrth i fwy a mwy o bobl ddysgu Cernyweg. Mae dosbarthiadau i oedolion yng Nghernyw ac mewn rhannau eraill o’r byd, yn yr ystafelloedd dosbarth a hefyd ar-lein. Mae’r Gernyweg yn hawdd iawn i’w dysgu os ydych chi’n siarad Cymraeg yn barod. Mae Cernyweg yn cael ei chyflwyno i ysgolion yng
Nghernyw ar bob lefel. Gallwch ddarganfod mwy ar wefan Go Cornish.

Mae’r dosbarth Cernyweg yn Brithdir Mawr ar gyfer dechreuwyr pur a bydd yn ffordd ddiddorol a phleserus o dreulio awr a hanner yr wythnos wrth i chi ddysgu un o’r chwe iaith Geltaidd, ac un sy’n agos iawn at y Gymraeg. Bydd y prif bwyslais yn y dosbarth ar Gernyweg llafar er y byddwch hefyd yn dysgu darllen ac ysgrifennu’r iaith.

Tuesday 14th October  at Bluestone Brewery

Open Meeting to Discuss the Situation at Brithdir Mawr

In August, the Brithdir Mawr Housing Co-operative (BMHC) received a letter co-signed by 39 of our friends, neighbours and some ex-members, saying that they do not support the BMHC in continuing to live at Brithdir Mawr. Resulting conversations flagged up both understandable concerns and also some common misconceptions about the situation that has evolved here.

We have been considering holding an open meeting to discuss the situation for some time now. Receiving the letter suggested to us that it is now time to do this.

On the 14th October at 6 pm, the meeting will be held at the Bluestone Brewery. This meeting is an opportunity for anyone who cares about what happens at Brithdir Mawr to share their views, ask questions, or just listen to what others have to say. It will also be an opportunity for the BMHC to respond to questions, and speak to those that come about why we are acting in the ways that we are.

Our new landlord was invited to come and take the platform alongside us. We understand that she has chosen not to do so. We are hoping that she will provide a statement to be read out, so that the event can include as many different views as possible.

We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. The developing situation at Brithdir Mawr has the potential to affect us all. We are trying our hardest to find the best way through, with compassion and cooperation. Please come and talk with us.
